Alice Ball was an African American chemist whose work at the College of Hawaii produced a practical injectable preparation from chaulmoogra oil, then used against Hansen's disease. She died at twenty-four before publishing the method or seeing its widespread adoption.
Ball matters because chemical technique altered what a difficult medicine could do, while her lost credit reveals how youth, race, gender, employment status, and early death shape scientific memory.
The Ball Method
Chaulmoogra preparations had circulated in Asian medicine and colonial therapeutic networks long before Ball. The oil could be swallowed or applied, but unpleasant effects, poor absorption, and difficulty injecting it limited treatment.

Her master's work analysed the chemistry of kava. That experience with plant compounds helped qualify her for the chaulmoogra problem posed through physician Harry Hollmann and the Hawaii public-health system.
Before effective antibiotics, people diagnosed with Hansen's disease in Hawaii could be forcibly separated from families and sent to Kalaupapa. Improvement after chaulmoogra ester treatment allowed some patients to leave isolation, although it was not a reliable modern cure.
After Ball's death, college president Arthur Dean continued the work and promoted the preparation without initially naming her. Hollmann later published an account that explicitly identified her contribution and called it the Ball Method.
Education and Empire
Ball studied pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacy at the University of Washington, co-authored research, and moved to Honolulu for graduate study. In 1915 she became the first woman and first African American to receive a master's degree from the College of Hawaii and then taught chemistry there.
Her laboratory work was entangled with a colonial health regime that classified, confined, and experimented upon people with a stigmatised disease. Patients were not simply beneficiaries of innovation; their bodies and constrained choices made therapeutic knowledge possible.
Ball became ill and died in 1916. The exact cause remains uncertain, despite repeated claims about a laboratory accident. Historical care requires leaving that uncertainty open.
Recovery
Decades later, historians and University of Hawaii researchers reconstructed Ball's career from publications, records, and Hollmann's acknowledgment. Campus memorials, Alice Ball Day, scholarships, and a chemical landmark have made her name more visible.
Recovery should not reverse one great-person myth into another. Ball's achievement depended on earlier materia medica, patients, laboratory colleagues, and later clinical use. Giving her accurate credit makes that network clearer.
