Ibn al-Nafis

Ibn al-Nafis was a thirteenth-century physician and medical author who trained in Damascus and worked in Cairo. His commentaries on Ibn Sina's Canon of Medicine combined respect for an established text with a willingness to reject anatomical explanations he considered impossible.

He matters because his account of blood passing from the right side of the heart through the lungs to the left replaced Galen's invisible pores in the cardiac septum with a pulmonary route. Just as importantly, his work shows commentary functioning as a form of original medical argument.

Why Ibn al-Nafis changed the history of circulation

His achievement was not a complete modern circulation model waiting unchanged to be rediscovered. It was a precise intervention within medieval learned physiology, expressed through close engagement with authoritative medical writing.

He rejected pores between the ventricles

Galenic physiology held that blood could cross through unseen openings in the heart's septum. Ibn al-Nafis argued that the partition was solid and that blood from the right ventricle had to travel by the pulmonary artery toward the lungs.

He gave the lungs an active physiological role

His account sent blood through vessels in the lung, where it encountered air, before returning by the pulmonary vein to the left side of the heart. This “lesser circulation” corrected a central anatomical pathway without producing William Harvey's later model of systemic circulation.

He made commentary critical rather than submissive

Ibn al-Nafis criticised Ibn Sina for scattering anatomy across the Canon and wrote a separate commentary on its anatomical portions. Commentary allowed him to organise, dispute, and replace inherited claims.

His medical writing extended beyond one passage

He produced the popular Mujaz, an epitome of the Canon, works on diet and ophthalmology, and an ambitious comprehensive medical book. Later teaching traditions often knew him through these wider texts rather than pulmonary circulation alone.

Historical Context

A hospital physician inside a mature commentary culture

Ibn al-Nafis studied medicine in Damascus, a city with established hospitals, teachers, book collections, and traditions of clinical and textual learning. He later moved to Cairo, where he practised and taught within another major urban medical centre.

His method cannot be reduced to direct human dissection. The surviving arguments draw on logic, physiological necessity, observation, and close textual criticism. Whether and how anatomical practice contributed remains debated, so it is safer to follow what his writing demonstrates than to invent a modern experimental scene.

The commentary did not become a simple bridge leading directly to European physiology. Some Ibn al-Nafis material entered Latin translation, but historians continue to debate whether his anatomical account reached early modern European writers. Similarity alone does not prove a line of transmission.

Transmission and Legacy

Manuscripts made a forgotten argument newly visible

Ibn al-Nafis remained influential through works such as the Mujaz, but his anatomical commentary did not hold the same continuous public prominence. In the twentieth century, Egyptian physician Muhyi al-Din al-Tatawi identified a manuscript while researching Arabic medicine in Germany, prompting renewed historical attention.

The language of “discovery” needs care here. Modern scholars rediscovered a text; Ibn al-Nafis had already written within a community of readers, copyists, and commentators. Manuscript survival and cataloguing determined which part of that career later became famous.

His place in history is strongest when neither diminished nor exaggerated. He produced a clear, consequential pulmonary account centuries before its best-known European counterparts, while working within a physiological framework different from modern cardiovascular science.
