Kaitai Shinsho

Published by Suharaya Ichibee in Edo in 1774, Kaitai ShinshoNew Book of Anatomy—reworked a 1734 Dutch version of Johann Adam Kulmus's anatomical tables into four Japanese text volumes and a separate volume of prefaces and woodblock illustrations.

Its importance does not lie in bringing anatomy to an otherwise empty medical culture. It made Dutch-derived anatomy and a new technical vocabulary available in a learned Japanese form, while preserving the marks of earlier dissections, collaborative translation, penal access to bodies, editorial selection, and print production.

Before the translation

Anatomical inquiry in Japan did not begin in 1771.

Tokugawa practitioners worked within several traditions: learned medicine grounded in Chinese texts and commentaries, Japanese clinical and surgical practice, pharmacology, and knowledge obtained through regulated contacts with Dutch merchants and interpreters at Nagasaki. Wolfgang Michel-Zaitsu situates Kaitai Shinsho within these seventeenth- and eighteenth-century interactions rather than treating it as an isolated act of genius (Michel-Zaitsu 2018).

1754–1759: Yamawaki Toyo made dissection a public controversy

Yamawaki observed the opening of an executed person's body in Kyoto in 1754 and published Zoshi in 1759. His findings provoked criticism as well as further interest. Historians therefore place Kaitai Shinsho after an already consequential debate about whether received accounts of the viscera should be tested against opened bodies (Kim 2012).

1770–1772: another dissection produced another book

Kawaguchi Shinnin conducted a dissection in Kyoto in 1770 and published Kaishihen in 1772. These works used different textual and visual resources, but together they rule out the durable claim that the Edo translators introduced human anatomical observation to Japan from nothing (Kim 2012).

The “Dutch” book already had a European translation history

Kulmus issued his Anatomische Tabellen at Danzig in 1722. Gerard Dicten's Amsterdam Ontleedkundige tafelen of 1734 then carried the work into Dutch. The Edo group encountered this mediated edition, itself dependent on earlier European anatomies and pictures—not an unfiltered report from a single anatomist (National Library of Medicine).

1771–1774

A dissection encounter became a translation and publication project.

1771, Kozukappara: Sugita, Maeno, Nakagawa, and others witnessed the dissection of an executed person's corpse at Edo's Kozukappara execution ground and compared the body with copies of the Dutch atlas. The comparison helped prompt the translation project. This episode is well attested in later accounts, but its most vivid details come from Sugita's old-age memoir, not a neutral diary written at the scene (Japan Search; National Diet Library).

Translation meetings: Maeno had the strongest command of Dutch and later evidence describes the work as proceeding under his leadership, with Sugita and Nakagawa among the central participants. The group parsed Dutch words and syntax, compared structures and images, and reshaped the result into a learned written register. “Sugita translated it” is therefore an inadequate description of collective and uneven labour (Hida 2026).

1773, Kaitai yakuzu: Before the full book appeared, Sugita and Nakagawa issued a five-sheet sample with three anatomical plates drawn by Kumagai Norikatsu. Its publisher was already Suharaya Ichibee. Library catalogues establish its date, contributors, size, and form; a University of Tokyo exhibition interprets it as both an advertisement and a way to gauge public and official response (Keio University and University of Tokyo).

1774, Kaitai Shinsho: The completed work appeared as four text volumes and one volume of introductory matter and pictures. Waseda's copy identifies Suharaya Ichibee, Sugita as translator, Nakagawa as reviser, Katsuragawa as reviewer, Ishikawa Genjo as consultant, and Odano Naotake in connection with the copied pictures. Maeno is absent from this printed attribution even though later evidence credits him with a leading role; the reason for that omission remains disputed (1774 copy and catalogue; Hida 2026).

Reading the translation

An anatomical vocabulary had to be selected, made, and explained.

Kaitai Shinsho is not a word-for-word Japanese equivalent of everything in Dicten's edition. It translates the main anatomical exposition into kanbun, a Japanese mode of writing modelled on Classical Chinese, while leaving out the Dutch book's extensive notes. Editorial omission made a shorter and differently argued book (Japan Search).

Existing words, semantic translations, and transcriptions coexisted

The book's editorial principles distinguish three approaches. A familiar referent could take an existing Japanese word: Dutch beenderen became hone, “bones.” A compound could receive a meaning-based Sino-Japanese rendering: kraakbeen became nankotsu, “cartilage.” Where the translators found no satisfactory equivalent, they could represent a Dutch sound with characters: klier, “gland,” appeared as kiriru. These were working solutions, not evidence that every concept had been fully understood (Hida 2026).

Kanbun addressed authority and readership

In a 1795 dialogue, Sugita explained that he associated Classical Chinese writing with a learned language readable beyond Japan, comparing its role in East Asia to his understanding of Latin in Europe. That later explanation helps account for the book's register, but it also records Sugita's retrospective justification rather than the whole group's intentions in 1774 (Hida 2026).

The book reconfigured its sources

Translation involved selecting passages, arranging chapters, adding editorial comments, matching labels to pictures, and consulting more than one anatomical work. It is better described as a Japanese compilation anchored in Dicten's Kulmus translation than as a transparent duplicate of one European original (National Library of Medicine; Waseda University Library).

The illustration volume is a composite visual argument.

Not every picture came from Kulmus

Most figures followed the Dutch Kulmus volume and its predecessors, but the opening image of Adam and Eve derives from Juan Valverde de Amusco's anatomy, and the final plates of hand and foot tendons derive from Govard Bidloo's 1690 Dutch anatomy. Identifying these sources corrects the impression of a single, uniform visual original (National Library of Medicine; Abe 2020).

Odano Naotake translated copperplate effects into woodblock

Odano, associated with the Akita painting circle now called Akita ranga, prepared the published pictures for a Japanese woodblock book. Lines, labels, modelling, paper, carving, and monochrome printing affected what readers saw. “Copied by Odano” in the bibliographic record names the draughtsman, not every unnamed craftsperson who turned designs into printed sheets (Waseda University Library; Abe 2020).

A digital image is one copy of one impression

Surviving sets can contain annotations, rebinding, wear, and different capture choices. A scan is excellent evidence for page order, labels, and a particular copy's condition; it cannot reproduce scale, paper, binding, or the full range of surviving impressions.

Bodies, authority, and credit

The celebrated observers depended on people the origin story obscures.

Penal power made the 1771 observation possible

The body compared with the atlas belonged to a person executed by Tokugawa authorities. She did not enter this history as a consenting patient or named collaborator. The episode therefore records not only anatomical curiosity but unequal access to the bodies of punished people. Later celebration of the scholars should not turn that access into an ethically neutral laboratory scene (Japan Search).

Observation was guided by the book

The witnesses did not approach an uninterpreted body. They arrived with an atlas, selected structures for comparison, and later narrated the agreement between picture and corpse as decisive evidence. That was a powerful historical claim, but a single dissection and a retrospective account cannot establish that every plate was accurate or that all earlier East Asian anatomical ideas were simply displaced.

The title page distributes authority unevenly

The printed attribution foregrounds Sugita and names several scholarly roles, while Maeno's central language work must be recovered from other documents. Publishers, block cutters, press workers, attendants, and the person whose body was opened are still less visible. The archive permits a more collective history, but not a complete list of participants (Waseda University Library; Hida 2026).

Correction, circulation, and memory

Influence did not make the 1774 translation final.

After 1774: The publication became a prominent model for rangaku—“Dutch learning,” the study of knowledge carried through Dutch-language books and contacts. Sugita taught students, while later practitioners developed more systematic language study. This is documented institutional and educational influence, not proof that Japanese medicine changed everywhere at once (National Diet Library).

1798–1826: Otsuki Gentaku completed a substantially revised Jutei Kaitai Shinsho in 1798; it was not published until 1826. Its expanded text, terminology materials, appendices, and copperplate pictures show that the 1774 wording and images were recognised as revisable rather than canonical or complete (Japan Search).

1815–1869: Near the end of his life, Sugita composed the memoir now called Rangaku kotohajime. It was written roughly forty years after the translation and survived in manuscript until Fukuzawa Yukichi sponsored a woodblock edition in 1869. The memoir is indispensable testimony to Sugita's memory and self-understanding, but it is not a contemporary record of each 1771–1774 meeting (Japan Search).

Later reputation: Textbooks, exhibitions, and commemorations often make the book a clean beginning of “modern medicine” in Japan. The stronger historical conclusion is narrower: it joined anatomical comparison, Dutch study, kanbun composition, illustration, and commercial print in an unusually visible publication. Earlier Japanese anatomies and later correction are part of that achievement, not footnotes to it (Michel-Zaitsu 2018).

It can show translation choices

A specified volume and folio can document how the editors rendered a Dutch term, omitted a note, inserted a comment, ordered body parts, or coordinated text and picture.

It cannot reconstruct every meeting or dissection

The printed book does not preserve every draft, disagreement, assistant, failed identification, bodily variation, reader response, or reason for assigning and withholding credit.

It is not current medical guidance

The work belongs to eighteenth-century anatomy and physiology. Its historical importance does not make its descriptions, reproductive models, or explanations appropriate for present diagnosis or treatment.
