Founded in 1222, the University of Padua became one of early modern Europe's most influential settings for anatomy, medical teaching, and arguments about knowledge grounded in observation.
Padua mattered not because it replaced books with bodies, but because it brought texts, dissection, teaching, civic patronage, and skilled observation into a particularly productive institutional arrangement.
Anatomy and teaching
Anatomy at Padua joined university teaching to dissection, illustration, public demonstration, and the authority of professors who claimed direct experience of the body.

Built in 1594 and inaugurated in 1595, Padua's permanent anatomical theatre replaced temporary structures. Its steep wooden galleries concentrated attention on the demonstration table and made anatomy a distinctive university spectacle.
Girolamo Fabrici d'Acquapendente directed anatomical teaching and oversaw the theatre. His work on venous valves formed part of the intellectual setting in which his student William Harvey later developed his account of blood circulation.
Institutional significance
The university drew students and teachers from across Europe. Under Venetian rule, its reputation for relative intellectual and religious freedom helped it attract scholars whose mobility carried Paduan methods and reputations elsewhere.
Dissection did not make Padua automatically modern or empirically pure. Anatomists still read ancient authorities, worked within legal and social constraints, and interpreted bodies through existing theory. The institution's importance lies in how it organised comparison between text and observation.
The theatre remained in use for centuries before anatomical teaching moved to new premises in the nineteenth century. Preserved within Palazzo Bo, it is now both a historical object and evidence of how architecture shaped medical education.
Bodies and authority
Public anatomy depended on civic and judicial authorities supplying bodies, university officers scheduling demonstrations, assistants preparing remains, and audiences observing rules of access. The professor's performance rested on this wider institutional machinery.
The bodies used for dissection were commonly those of executed or socially marginal people whose consent was not sought. Visual knowledge and educational prestige therefore emerged through unequal power over the dead as well as scholarly skill.
Recognising these conditions does not diminish Padua's influence. It explains how anatomical evidence became possible and why the history of observation must include the legal and social arrangements that placed some bodies on the table and others in the galleries.
