The Bencao Gangmu

The Bencao Gangmu (本草綱目), compiled by the physician and scholar Li Shizhen (1518–1593) and first issued at Nanjing in 1596, reorganised a long Chinese bencao tradition: literature about medicinal substances, their names, qualities, preparation, uses, and prescriptions.

It matters not as a timeless list of herbal cures, but as a record of how late-Ming scholars made pharmaceutical knowledge from inherited books, language, observation, recipes, and objects—and how a family, commercial printers, editors, and readers continued to remake that record after Li's death.

Before the compendium

Li revised an old textual practice rather than inventing materia medica.

Bencao is conventionally translated “materia medica,” but neither “herbal” nor “pharmacopoeia” fully captures the genre. Such works classified substances used in prescriptions and discussed qualities such as flavour, heating or cooling character, toxicity, preparation, and therapeutic application. They could also preserve arguments over names and properties, and include animals, minerals, foods, manufactured things, and human-derived materials as well as plants. The categories belong to historical Chinese medicine and should not be silently converted into modern pharmacology (Nappi 2009).

A major predecessor supplied a working model

Li drew heavily on Tang Shenwei's late-eleventh-century Zhenglei bencao (“Materia medica arranged by pattern and categories”), which already brought non-medical literature into pharmaceutical compilation. The Bencao Gangmu expanded and reworked that inheritance; it did not replace an empty or purely folkloric past (Nappi 2009).

Late-Ming print enlarged the possible readership

The project belonged to a commercial print culture in southern China where compendia, manuals, and collections addressed a growing classically literate readership. Printing a work of nearly two million characters required capital, blocks, paper, skilled labour, and a market; authorship alone could not put it into circulation (Elman 2007).

Compilation was a claim to scholarly medicine

Li treated the correction of drug names and categories as part of the classicist “investigation of things” (gewu). That phrase linked the work to a late-imperial intellectual programme of finding order in textual and material things. It does not make Li a laboratory scientist before his time (Elman 2007).

Reading an entry

Classification, citation, and recipe occupy the same page.

The opening juan survey earlier bencao writing, identify medical and non-medical books consulted, discuss pharmaceutical principles, and group drugs by illnesses for which they were prescribed. The remaining text moves through sixteen broad divisions, from water, fire, earth, and minerals through plants, implements, animals, and humans. That sequence presents a hierarchical late-Ming view of useful matter, not biological descent or a Linnaean taxonomy (Nappi 2009; Elman 2007).

Names were a safety and knowledge problem

Regional names, synonyms, copied characters, and different referents could cause one substance to be mistaken for another. Entry rubrics therefore explain names, collect descriptions, and sometimes mark earlier errors. Philology was practical pharmaceutical work, although a proposed correction was still an argument rather than proof of a stable modern species.

Several voices coexist

Li assembled claims from earlier medical authorities, histories, poetry, local knowledge, and accounts of unusual phenomena, then added comments in his own authorial voice. A statement found in the book is not automatically Li's observation or endorsement. Its evidential status depends on who is cited, what kind of text supplied it, and what editorial comment surrounds it (Nappi 2009).

Properties joined preparation and use

Entries could connect origin and appearance to processing, flavour, thermal qualities, toxicity, principal indications, explanation, and appended formulas. Not every entry contains every rubric. The book's “drugs” are therefore not equivalent to isolated chemical compounds, and its disease names do not map neatly onto present diagnoses.

The kitchen could be a medical workplace

Grinding, soaking, roasting, combining, and cooking linked pharmacy to dietetics and household labour. Vivienne Lo and Penelope Barrett show that culinary language and technique structured many recipes; this is more historically specific than dividing the text into modern categories of “food” and “medicine” (Lo and Barrett 2005).

Making and remaking the book

The publication history is a chronology of collaborative labour.

About 1552–1578: Li researched and compiled the work for decades, marking a draft complete in 1578 and continuing to revise it. He used earlier books and contemporary information; broad claims that he personally tested every remedy or travelled throughout all China exceed the evidence.

1590–1596: The eminent writer Wang Shizhen dated his preface 1590. Printer Hu Chenglong began cutting blocks at Nanjing in 1593, the year Li died, and issued the Jinling edition in 1596. “1593” consequently appears in some catalogues as a publication date, but current historical studies generally distinguish the start of production from the 1596 issue (Nappi 2009).

Family production: Li's son Li Jianyuan helped secure publication, presented a copy at court in 1596, and is credited with the first edition's illustrations. Together with Hu Chenglong's printing work, his documented role makes clear that the printed Bencao Gangmu should not be reduced to the solitary achievement of one heroic author.

1603 and after: A Jiangxi printing added prefaces and Li Jianyuan's memorial. Later editions changed images and paratext and sometimes appended other works. A 1640 Wulin edition substantially recut the illustrations; a leaf in one edition cannot safely stand for every witness (Nappi 2009).

A court legend requires caution: The later Ming History claimed that the emperor ordered the book printed and circulated. Nappi notes that the contemporary palace record says only that the emperor saw it, the Ministry of Rites knew of it, and it was retained in the palace. That is evidence of presentation, not proof of an imperial publishing programme (Nappi 2009).

Circulation and reputation

Later readers made the compendium authoritative in different ways.

Japan was a site of translation and revision

The work reached Tokugawa Japan by 1607, and a Japanese edition appeared at Kyoto in 1637. Reprints added reading marks, annotations, and new images. Scholars used its Chinese names and categories to identify Japanese plants and animals, but the mismatch between book names and local specimens generated glossaries, commentaries, field notes, and revised works rather than passive copying (Hayek 2021).

Influence was not a single unbroken export

Claims that the whole compendium was rapidly translated into numerous European languages often confuse excerpts, descriptions, and partial translations with complete versions. Its strongest early circulation was where readers could work with literary Chinese. Each translation also chooses modern equivalents for substances and medical concepts that may remain uncertain (Métailié 2006).

Canonical status did not end correction

Zhao Xuemin's Bencao Gangmu shiyi (“Correction of Omissions in the Bencao Gangmu”), first published in 1871, added and corrected material and was appended to later editions. The afterlife of the book includes criticism and supplementation as well as reverence (Nappi 2009).

Reputation is not clinical validation

Modern commemoration has sometimes cast Li as a lone scientific discoverer or the compendium as a storehouse of treatments awaiting confirmation. Historians instead examine how its heterogeneous claims were assembled and used. Current evidence for one identified substance cannot validate other entries, a historical disease category, or the book as a whole (Nappi 2009).

What this book can—and cannot—show

It can show learned arguments

A specified edition can document that an authority was quoted, a name compared, a preparation described, or a claim classified in a particular way.

It cannot show routine outcomes by itself

A prescription's presence does not establish how often practitioners used it, who could obtain its ingredients, how patients experienced it, or whether it was safe and effective.

It is not a treatment manual for the present

Historical identifications and measurements can be uncertain, while toxicity, adulteration, dosage, and interactions require substance-specific modern evidence. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health warns that herbal products may interact with medicines and may be contaminated (NCCIH).
