The Bencao Gangmu
Compiled by the Ming physician Li Shizhen, the Bencao Gangmu, or Compendium of Materia Medica, organised an enormous inheritance of medicinal substances, names, descriptions, preparations, effects, prescriptions, corrections, and observations.
The compendium is evidence of editorial labour as much as medical knowledge. Li compared earlier books and contemporary information, while relatives, illustrators, printers, commentators, translators, and later readers made the work durable after his death.

Publication and afterlives
The first edition was a family and printing project.
Li completed a draft in 1578 but struggled to secure publication. The first Jinling edition appeared only after his death, with members of his family involved in proofreading and illustration. A widely influential 1603 reprint became the basis for many later editions.
Printing extended the compendium across China and into other East Asian reading cultures. Every reprint could change layout, images, paratext, and errors, making bibliography essential to understanding what a particular reader actually encountered.
Modern translations make the work accessible through new terminologies that do not map perfectly onto Ming categories. Rendering substance names or therapeutic concepts into biomedical language can clarify one relationship while concealing another.
The Bencao Gangmu is a historical medical source, not a stand-alone guide to safe treatment. Entries preserve claims from different periods, and identification, dosage, toxicity, contamination, interactions, and evidence require contemporary expertise.
